Have You Heard Of The VIP Fellowship? Here Are 10 Facts!

1. It is about bringing in professionals from all over the world to help share their knowledge with NGOs and social enterprises.

The main goal of the VIP Fellowship is to attract foreign and local professional talent to share their experience and knowledge with NGOs and social enterprises to help expand community impact. Usually it is incredibly hard for NGOs and social enterprises to source professional talent due to various reasons. This results in poor growth and a scarcity of a capable workforce to help solve the issues these organisations exist to combat.

With the help of VIP Fellows, who join these organisations for four months at a time, the organisations are able to expand their impact, spearhead new projects and explore many new angles that were previously not possible due to a lack of resources and effective manpower.

2. It is a part of the National Blue Ocean Strategy

Started in 2015, the VIP Fellowship is spearheaded by the Ministry of Finance Malaysia, with all funds and support coming directly from the ministry as part of the National Blue Ocean Strategy. This means that fellows and host organisations alike are working directly with members of the Ministry of Finance.

3. It’s been running for two years now, and this is its 3rd year!

For the last two years, VIP has had two cycles, bringing in 30 international and 20 national fellows to volunteer with host organisations in Malaysia. While they have all returned to their home countries immediately after the program, they still maintain an active alumni network that stretches across continents.

4. Fellows get their costs covered for their trip to ASEAN

While leaving your cushy job at home might sound intimidating, especially financially, fellows don’t need to worry much! No matter which part of the world fellows are coming in from, VIP will readily sponsor their air tickets, visas and even accommodation for their trip to ASEAN.

5. It may sound like a dive on the deep end, but we got you covered.

Fellows, upon arrival, don’t immediately get sent off to work with their host organisations on ground. While we would love the work to get started ASAP, fellows are required to undergo a series of orientations and trainings to align their abilities with the host organisations they’re matched with.

Throughout the entire four months, fellows will also receive immediate support from the Incitement team plus access to Incitement’s global resources to assist them in their work.

6. What does it take to become a VIP Fellow?

VIP Fellows need to have at least 3 years of professional working or volunteering experience, possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, be proficient in English (reading, writing and speaking), be able to commit to the entire 16-week programme full time.

Finally, they must have the guts to leave their jobs for 4 months for a trip to ASEAN to change the lives of local communities and their own.

7. Applying to be a Fellow is pretty easy!

If you’re convinced about this already but put off by the potential of filling up form after form after form, we are glad to tell you that your worries are for naught!

Just head over to this link, and fill up the form at the end, which will take you approximately 10-15 minutes (or even less if you type fast). Then sit back, relax, and wait till we contact you for further details! That’s it!

8. Did we mention a monthly allowance would be given as well?

While it does say volunteering, we aren’t expecting our fellows to be footing all the bills for four months without a job. Aside from all the costs coverage mentioned above, VIP Fellows will also receive a stipend to ensure that their work in ASEAN is undeterred by financial issues due to lack of a salary.

9. Only FIFTY (50) fellows will be selected this year to join ten host organisations

Regardless of how many applications are received, only 50 fellows will be selected to join the VIP Fellowship for 2017’s cycle. That means every single person who applies will be interviewed and vetted personally by members of the Ministry of Finance to ensure that they are the best fit to volunteer in ASEAN under the Fellowship.

Upon selection, they will each be designated to one of ten host organisations to be announced in a few weeks.

10. Host Organisations are NGOs and social enterprises vetted by the Ministry of Finance.

Fellows won’t be working for just any other NGO or social enterprise, instead the Host Organisations will be the result of a very tight vetting by the Ministry of Finance to ensure that they’re sustainable, legitimate and capable of solving issues that fall within VIP’s impact areas.
