IMPACT PROJECT 5

The Unseen Tours of Kuala Lumpur

Urban Poor (The homeless)

Impact Area:

Urban Poor (The homeless)

Location:

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Host Organisation:

Khatulistiwa Enterprise (Yellow House KL)

The Unseen Tours of KL is a unique, first-of-its-kind social innovation to permanently solve involuntary homelessness. This project trains the homeless people to become a tour guide. Yellow House KL (or one of their partner organisations) can then employ the homeless person and provide him or her with not only a stable income, but also a sense of purpose.

Unseen Tours is well on its way of solving homelessness in Kuala Lumpur. All that was missing was a team of experts to build a solid foundation to scale upon. Through the VIP Fellowship Programme, Unseen Tours could leverage a team of professional volunteers with significant experience in tourism management, mass communications, commercial graphic design, youth and leadership development and Syariah and International law. Having a team of people with the right skill sets and experience ready to grow this initiative allows Unseen Tours to increase its social impact and decrease homelessness.

"I was an alcoholic, I did not blend and mix well with the society and getting a full time job was impossible because of my fear of going for an interview. All this has changed since I joined The Unseen Tours. It has helped me to start a new life, a new beginning. My biggest learning here is that I learned to be confident in communicating with other people, and that I can mix back into society. ~ Josh Kam"
